Michael Mark
My intention in applying to this Artist-in-Residence Program is to more closely observe and paint the verdant shadows and saturated colors I associate with New England. When visiting the Weir Farm Art Center, in the summer of 2018, I was struck by both the rich history of the farm and the luxurious woods - here was/is a place Ryder and Twachtman visited, painted and located subject matter(s).
My own subject matter is concerned with the depiction of ineffable moments that appear and disappear in the mist, the use of exaggerated color and the slippage between the real and un-real. After more than a decade of living in suburban Melbourne, Australia, I am keen to investigate the colours and compositions of ‘home’.
Upon completion of the residency, I propose to have a show of work in Salisbury, Connecticut and in Melbourne, Australia, consisting primarily of paintings done on wooden panels with oil paint.
I am a creature of habit, typically having two work sessions in the day; preparing panels, reading and paperwork in the morning, then lunch, and a long work session from 2-8pm, I will pleased to interact with staff and visitors as opportunities arise.
